Your First Watch Mod: 5-Minute Checklist
Your First Mod: the 5-Minute Checklist
Modding sounds like a bench, loupe and steady hands. In reality your first mod is a strap swap, takes five minutes, and is completely reversible. Here’s the whole checklist.
The kit
- One spring bar tool (or a straightened paperclip in a pinch, honestly)
- A soft towel as your work surface
- Your new strap — with the right width for your watch
The five steps
- Confirm the width. 22mm for SKX/Duro/CasiOak-with-adapter, 20mm for Alpinist/SKX013, 18mm for F-91W/AE-1200, size-class for Apple Watch. Width is printed in every strapmod listing.
- Towel down, watch face-up, strap pointing at you.
- Press the spring bar tool between strap and lug, catch the bar shoulder, compress toward the strap. The old strap lifts free.
- Seat the new strap’s bars into the lug holes — you’ll feel the click.
- Tug test both ends. A seated bar doesn’t budge. Done.
Three beginner mistakes
- Ordering the wrong width — the #1 first-mod failure. Measure, or trust the fitment chart on each listing.
- Fighting a quick-release pin. If your strap has a pull-tab on the underside, you don’t need the tool at all.
- Modding on a hard desk. The tool slips once and your case wears it forever. Towel, always.
Where to go second
Strap sorted? The rabbit hole order most people follow: adapters → bracelets → full RO-style builds. Welcome to the hobby — it’s all downhill (in a good way) from here.
FAQ
What tool do I actually need?
A spring-bar tool for most swaps on standard lugs — a small flathead works in a pinch but scratches more.
Can a strap swap go wrong?
Only two ways: ordering the wrong width (measure the lug gap first) or launching a spring bar across the room — work over a towel.
Does swapping a strap void anything?
No. Strap swaps never open the case; the movement and seals stay exactly as the factory left them.
